The first pilot application of SMART FACADE operating in the real environment was carried out in Ankara-Turkey in 2020. SMART FACADE, manufactured with steel construction, is both an economical facade and a dynamic-adaptive facade with its single-walled structure that allows air circulation. 

Construction phase

"Steel" was used in the "Smart Facade" design, thus increasing the thermal mass of the facade and achieving a more economical design.

.Since the building was vacant, it was not possible to conduct surveys with users. However, instead, a vertical farming system, which is highly sensitive to temperature and sunlight, has been established. So far, the plants have been growing healthily!

Measurements and First Evaluations

Winter Feb.16-24 (2023)

While the outside temperature in February (2023) varies between -5 C and 10 C, the circulating air temperatures on the roof level are shown in the graph. In winter, the air temperature close to 50 C was measured for 4-5 hours a day. This shows the solar thermal energy storage capacity of the Smart Facade even in winter.

Winter (March 11-17)  

In March (2023), the outdoor temperature varies between 2 °C and 8 °C, while the indoor temperature varies between 17-20 °C. No heating equipment was used. It is seen how the thermal capacity of the building has improved structurally with the "Smart Facade". Only by closing the outside air dampers, the cooling of the building was prevented, and the indoor temperature of the building could be kept at a temperature almost close to the comfort temperature.

Summer :   

Technologies such as double facade, which saves heating energy in winter, if not well planned, usually cause an increase in the cooling load and a decrease in total savings, and sometimes even an increase in total heating-cooling costs, in summer months. However, there is no such risk in the case of "Smart Facade".

There is no shading system in the façade system installed for experimental purposes, and there is no reflective coating on the windows. The glasses are selected "ultra clear". Despite this, Smart Facade is extremely successful in reducing the cooling load, as well as not causing overheating in summer.

During the day, the air temperature on the SE façade increased up to 66C and in the afternoon the air temperature on the SW façade increased up to 71C. This energy can be easily utilized for the hot water needs of the building. Although there was no "cooling" in the building, the temperature inside the building (due to the natural flow on the façade) did not exceed 35 C.As the air temperature decreased at night, the internal temperature of the building was reduced to 30C only with the help of ventilation fans (night cooling).
